AT&T CallVantage VoIP

The telecommunications giant is not an Internet telephony giant (yet)

AT&T is the leader in American telecommunications, so their CallVantage VoIP service ought to be one of the best in the industry, right? Perhaps - but not necessarily.

Features

The best thing about AT&T's CallVantage is its features. Call features make up the most widely cited reason people purchase AT&T's CallVantage. The conference call feature allows you to speak to 10 people at a time - all users - at no additional charges. AT&T also offers a service called Record and Send that allows you to record a single message then "mass send" this to a list of numbers.

Prices

  • $24.99 per month for unlimited calling to anywhere in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. This is actually a drop in rate from previous charges. That can still come out pretty pricey, especially after taxes. As one reviewer says, this is "the most expensive service out there, but they know what they're doing."
  • $19.99 per month for unlimited local calls and four cents a minute for long distance.

Call quality

The call quality is generally rated "very good" for AT&T's Call Vantage VoIP service.

Service reliability

This is one advantage in going with a robust VoIP service provider, like AT&T. If you are worried about dropped calls or 911 service, then AT&T's reliable name will serve you well in VoIP service.

Customer service is also ranked very highly in reviews of AT&T's VoIP service: calls are usually answered within two minutes by a live operator who will patiently walk you through the problem (a high percentage of reviewers claim this - remarkable). In addition, there is no termination fee if you cancel within the very first month or after a year.

The only disadvantage to their service is that you are asked to "do it yourself"when installing VoIP from AT&T. Many users report that service may be sporadic at first; but this may be the user's own doing. In many cases, they report the service reliability becomes excellent after a few months.

Broadband type

AT&T uses cable or DSL, depending on your service area.
