Packet8 Internet Phone Service

Attempting to stand out from the pack

This company offers some of the most reasonable monthly rates in the VoIP industry. It offers some interesting features. Packet8 is one of the first companies to anticipate the use of true videophones. Packet8 is the first company to offer enhanced 911 calling over VoIP. This uses Public Safety Answering Points. This feature is an answer to one of the greatest concerns about VoIP.

Features

Video over Internet: Packet8 is the only VoIP provider that offers video capability. Packet8 Videophones are required for both users. It offers premier VoIP service that puts it into the top echelon of VoIP companies.

“Find Me Follow Me” is Packet8’s name for a feature that is typical in VoIP service providers. This allows you to “dial in” five other phones to your service; if you’re not at your Packet8-enabled phone, the call is forwarded to your cell phone, home phone or other until the VoIP call reaches you. Caller ID blocking, three-way calling (instant conferencing), “do not disturb” and many other of the usual VoIP features are standard to Packet8 telephones.

Prices

  • $19.99 per month for premium unlimited service, with free activation and free service to all points in the U.S. and Canada. Their free trial lasts 30 days. There is a 1.9 cent charge per minute for all international calls.
  • Softalk Premium package allows 500 minutes for all calls to within Canada and the U.S.
  • Packet8 Freedom Annual comes in at just under $200 for one annual fee that allows you unlimited calls all year long. In addition, the phone adapter is free.

There are some complaints about charges for international calls, where every call results in a charge and there are some complaints about hidden but nominal 911 fees. Some complaints are invalid, though, as optional fees are listed on their website.

On the other hand, the average Packet8 VoIP package is cheaper than themore visible VoIP companies.

Call quality

There are some complaints about “call lag,” but this is more than likely a service area problem. The sound quality is very clear for most Packet8 subscribers and rated “better than the competition.”

Service reliability

There are some complaints about the lack of call display (this can be a typical problem with VoIP, since calls are not as traceable as they are through conventional phone lines).

Customer service

The customer service for Packet8 is generally considered excellent. Phone tech support is great, though online support has more difficulties.

Broadband type

Cable and DSN.
